What to Pray Over Your Kids This Week
Some weeks I pray big, thoughtful prayers over my daughter. Other weeks, if I'm being honest, it's a whispered "Lord, please just help her today" while I'm packing a lunch and looking for the other shoe.
Both count. I really believe that. But I've noticed that when I go into the week with a few specific things to pray for, I pray more often and more intentionally, and somehow I feel more at peace about the things I can't control.
So here are six simple prayers to carry with you this week. You don't need to say them perfectly or all at once. Pick one a day, write one on a sticky note by the coffee maker, or whisper one over a sleeping little face at night. God hears every one.
1. To Know They Are Deeply Loved
Zephaniah 3:17
Lord, before my child learns anything else this week, let them know how loved they are. Not for how they behave or what they accomplish, but because they're Yours. When they feel small, left out, or not enough, remind them that You delight in them and sing over them.
2. A Kind Heart That Notices
Ephesians 4:32
Father, give my child eyes that notice the kid sitting alone, the friend who's having a hard day, the sibling who needs a little grace. Let kindness come naturally to them, and when it doesn't, gently soften their heart.
3. Courage for New Things
Joshua 1:9
Lord, whatever feels big to my child this week, whether it's a new classroom, a hard test, a first practice, or just walking into a room full of people, go before them. Give them courage that doesn't come from having it all figured out, but from knowing You're right there with them.
4. Peace When They Worry
Philippians 4:6–7
God, when my child's mind starts racing at bedtime or their tummy hurts from nerves, quiet their heart. Teach them, little by little, that they can bring every worry to You. Let Your peace settle over them in a way they can actually feel.
5. An Honest, Tender Heart
Psalm 51:10
Lord, help my child be honest even when it's hard, and quick to say sorry when they're wrong. Keep their heart tender toward You and toward the people around them, and let them always know they can come home to grace.
6. A Faith All Their Own
Luke 2:52
Father, I can teach and pray and model what I know, but I can't give my child faith. Only You can do that. Let them grow in wisdom and in love for You, not because I asked them to, but because they come to know You for themselves.
Making It Part of Your Week
Our weeks are full: school mornings, practices, laundry, three dogs underfoot, and dinners that sometimes happen standing up. Prayer doesn't have to be one more thing on the list. It can live inside the moments you already have.
- Pick a prayer for each day. Monday through Saturday, one prayer per day, then rest on Sunday.
- Pray it out loud with them. At the breakfast table, in the car line, or tucked into bed. Kids remember the words they hear us say over them.
- Keep it somewhere you'll see it. A note on the fridge, the bathroom mirror, or a little card on their nightstand.
- Let their walls remind you too. A verse hanging in their room can be a quiet nudge to pray as you pass by. Our Nursery & Kids pieces were made with exactly that in mind.
Some days you'll remember to pray all six. Some days you'll get through one. Either way, you're doing something beautiful: handing the little people you love most back to the One who loves them even more.
